More information on the Xplore Genesys II

My previous post about the Xplore Genesys II gathered a plethora of comments (Not to mention page-views!), many of which described the troubles of this tablet. While I have not made very much progress with the tablet so far, those commentors have, and described how they achieved it.

Now for my contribution: A few pictures of the battery & motherboard of the tablet with a few things I noticed while mucking around. While it’s not much, it just may be all a person needs to fix their tablet.

A few things I learned while taking this tablet apart:

  • Remove the battery before taking apart; if for nothing else other than maneuvering space.
  • Remove the docking connector first from the back of the tablet by unscrewing it and carefully and firmly pulling it straight out. Reverse this process when your all done playing with the insides of the tablet.
  • There are two PCMCIA slots on the motherboard, and they are normal ones. The only problem is there is not very much room inside the case for larger cards
  • Be careful not to rip the ribbon cables when lifting up the upper panel
  • RAM slot uses standard laptop SDRAM
  • Sometimes installing a hard-drive is difficult because of the various capacitors and such sticking out. You may have to reposition it several times
  • The processor uses the case itself as a heat-sink, so make sure you do not wipe all the thermal grease off. Actually, if possible, replace the thermal grease with some new high quality stuff.
  • The motherboards layout can vary slightly, making some more difficult to work with. They all follow the same general layout though.

On a side note Harold and David have also both used 12v 1A to 2A adapters to boot their tablets successfully. (See here, here, and here) So it’s a pretty safe bet to try one out.

Now on to pictures of the tablet & battery. Hopefully the pictures of the battery help you David, because these pictures show everything I can find out… (Click for a larger image)

Sorry about there being no back view of the motherboard; I lost my picture over my vacation.
